Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 August 2026
HopFocus is an online tutoring app for New Zealand tamariki, operated from Aotearoa New Zealand. We take children's privacy seriously and handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles.
Who this policy is for
HopFocus accounts are created and controlled by a parent or legal guardian. We do not knowingly collect information directly from a child without a parent setting up the account first. Parents may view, correct, export or delete their family's information at any time from the Parent Dashboard.
What we collect
- Parent account details — email address, password (stored hashed), and a parent PIN.
- Child profiles — first name or nickname, age or year level, interests, things they find tricky, and what motivates them. Only what the parent chooses to enter.
- Learning activity — lesson messages, answers, topics covered, stars, badges, streaks, attendance/routine records, and any drawings or homework photos submitted for help.
- Voice — if speech is used, audio is sent for transcription and is not retained by us after the transcript is produced.
- Billing — subscription status and customer/subscription identifiers. Card details are handled by Stripe; we never see or store them.
- Technical — basic device/browser information and error logs needed to keep the app working.
Why we collect it
To provide the tutoring service: pitching lessons at the right level, remembering progress, producing parent reports and homeschool evidence records, keeping the service secure, and processing subscriptions. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use children's data for advertising or profiling for marketing.
AI and third parties (overseas disclosure)
Lessons are generated by artificial intelligence. To do this, lesson text and any images a child submits for help are sent to our service providers, which may store or process information outside New Zealand:
- AI model providers — to generate tutoring replies, speech and transcription.
- Hosting and database provider — to run the app and store your account data.
- Stripe — subscription payments.
- Resend — account and weekly report emails.
Some of these providers are based overseas (including the United States and the EU). By using HopFocus you consent to this overseas disclosure, which we make on the basis that these providers are required to protect the information with comparable safeguards (IPP 12). We ask our AI providers not to use your content to train their models.
How long we keep it
We keep your family's information for as long as the account is open, and for a short period afterwards for billing and legal records. When you delete your account from Settings, child profiles, lesson history, progress and reports are permanently removed.
Security
Data is stored in an access-controlled database with row-level security so a family can only ever see its own records. Parent-only areas are protected by a PIN. No system is perfect — if a privacy breach ever caused serious harm, we would notify affected families and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as required.
Your rights
You may ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about your family, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email hello@hopfocus.co.nz and we'll respond within 20 working days. If you're not happy with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above and, for significant changes, let account holders know by email.
